Despite the notion of Big Data is quite new, what it entitles is not. Bernard Marr says on his amazing post “What The Hell is… Big Data?” it’s all about the “datafication of the world” and data has always been among us.
What’s the buzz then around this new trend that seems will rule the Internet? The difference between now and then is just a technology matter. Nowadays we can easily access to devices and tools to analyse and file all this amount of data.
Ten years ago there was no data coming out from a song you were listening to. Today each time we read something on the Internet or on a device, some data are collected by developers such as what are you reading, where, how quickly you are reading… That will help companies to offer us a better product or service based on our preferences.
You won’t have to go deeper to check this. Try this: Go to Google and write something you’d like to know about (some store you’re looking for or service you want to receive) and then go to your profile on Facebook. You’ll probably have been served an ad of the service you were looking for on Google. Yes. Both companies are crossing search data.
What does this mean? The company with the technology to analyse and fill data will have the power on the advertising field. That is the purpose of Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and other tech giants: Collecting as many data as possible.
What happens then with those small businesses that cannot access to the required technology? They also might know their customers behaviours and get the most out of Big Data.
What small businesses can do
“Small businesses that use data intelligently can do business better”, says Tim Devaney on Forbes. How? By developing for example better products and services based on their customers’ preferences.
“Big data is bringing back personalized service by giving businesses greater insight into consumer preferences, many times without even talking to them, because customers leave digital footprints when they use the Internet, use a credit card or post on Facebook” (Tim Devaney)
Tools to analyse Big Data
Apart from high tech tools that big companies use to get the data they’re looking for, small businesses can use others much cheaper that will actually fit their interests better, with no need to be an expert in the field:
- – Google Analytics: It’s the most common tool among the majority of businesses. By now many of them use it only to see how many visits receive their websites. But you’ll be surprised of the valuable information that the tab “Audience” actually gives you. You’ll find many data about your current visitors that you then will be able to use to define your strategy.
- – Roambi: Mostly used by small businesses in the USA, although it allows you to select different languages. According to reviews, it’s a very easy-to-use and useful tool. There’s a free 30 days trial for you to check.
- – Facebook also offers detailed information about your fans. Use it to know a little more about them.
